The Gift That Outlasts Everything

This Mother's Day, we'd like to tell you a story.

Last week a woman called us looking for replacement hardware for a clock she had been given in the mid1990s. The timber frame was still perfect, thirty years on. A few numerals had fallen off and the hands had bent. That was all that needed fixing. Thirty years. Still worth repairing. Still worth keeping.

That's what handmade does. It doesn't just last. It outlasts. It becomes the thing people call about decades later, still beautiful, still meaningful, still worth the effort of tracking down the right parts to bring it back to its best.

We've been supplying woodturners across Australia for nearly three decades, and in that time we've taken more calls like that one than we can count. A pepper mill turned by a father in the eighties. A bread knife with a handle shaped by a grandfather who has since passed. A pen turned from a piece of timber pulled from a tree that grew in the family's backyard. These aren't just objects. They're stories. And unlike almost everything else we give and receive, they have the remarkable ability to carry those stories forward — from one set of hands to the next, from one generation to the next. A bought gift, no matter how thoughtful, has a shelf life. A handmade gift has a legacy.

This Mother's Day, if you have a lathe and a blank and a few hours, you have everything you need to give her something she'll still be using in thirty years. Or if you don't, there are so many talented makers you can support. A pen she reaches for every morning. A knife that earns a permanent spot on the bench. A clock that keeps time long after the occasion that inspired it has been forgotten. And if the maker you support happens to be Australian, even better. There is incredible talent right here, and every handmade gift is a quiet vote for keeping it alive.

Give her something handmade. Something that will still be here long after the wrapping paper is forgotten and the flowers fade.

Happy Woodturning!
